Know the Causes of Cysts in Adolescent Girls

Cysts are one of the most common health disorders experienced by women. This condition involves the formation of lumps containing fluid, gas, or semi-solid material of varying sizes. The larger they are, the more likely these lumps can compress nearby organs.

Cysts are divided into two types depending on their location: ovarian cysts, which occur when there are lumps on the surface of the ovaries, and brain cysts, which occur in the brain. Brain cysts differ from brain tumors because these lumps do not originate from brain tissue.

Cysts themselves are not the same as fibroids or even cancer. Cysts are benign tumors that are not harmful. However, if the lumps grow larger, complications usually occur. Meanwhile, fibroids also belong to benign tumors that grow in the connective tissue or muscles of a woman’s uterus. Unlike tumors, which are lumps caused by excessive tissue growth.

Causes of Cysts in Adolescent Girls

Not only in adult women or the elderly, cysts can also occur in adolescent girls, especially those who have started menstruating. Based on studies that have been conducted, irregular menstruation cycles are believed to be the primary cause of cysts.

However, there are also several other factors that can cause the emergence of cysts, including:

• Inability of Follicles to Ovulate

Each time a woman has her menstrual cycle, there is one egg sac or follicle that will ovulate. Then, the ovulating follicle will degenerate and disappear because it is absorbed by the body. However, when follicles fail to ovulate, the chances of cyst formation are very high.

• Genetic Factors

Cysts in adolescent girls can also occur due to genetic factors. If any of the relatives or family members have a history of cysts, such as mothers or grandmothers, then the likelihood of cysts occurring in their descendants is high, especially if accompanied by an unhealthy lifestyle.

• Lack of Exercise

Busy schedules make you hardly have any extra time for exercise. However, exercise is crucial for maintaining health and body stamina, as well as keeping the body fit. Exercise is not only necessary for men but also for women, as fat accumulation in the upper body can also be an unnoticed cause of cysts. So, make time for at least 30 minutes of exercise every day.

• Irregular Menstrual Cycles

Irregular menstrual cycles can be caused by various factors, such as stress, unhealthy lifestyles, lack of exercise, and weight. Normally, menstruation occurs every 28 days. However, if you experience cycles longer than 45 days, it is advisable to consult a doctor about your body’s health. This is because irregular menstrual cycles also trigger the occurrence of cysts. Usually, cysts are more likely to affect adolescent girls who have their first menstruation at under 11 years old.

So, those were the four main factors that cause cysts in adolescent girls. Always be cautious and attentive to your body’s condition. Consult a doctor immediately if you experience or notice any unusual symptoms.
